Aquaponics/Aquaculture Program

In the Aquaponics/Aquaculture program, 6th grade Middle School students assist in raising 100 yellow perch fingerlings (approximately 3” in size).  Components of the project included bi-weekly sampling of the population to measure weight and track growth, weekly water sampling to measure a variety of water quality parameters, and a study of fish life cycles.  Each class culminates with an aquaculture simulation project where students design an aquaculture facility and run a simulation to see how much money they can make in their facility.  This project combines the science of aquaculture with the economics of fish farming.  The perch project has culminated with the release of the fish into the Abington Heights Middle School pond.
