FIRST Robotics
Do you think that in six short weeks you could build a machine to knock a ball off a tee, walk up two six-inch steps and extend ten feet into the air to grab a bar and do a chin up?? Well, that is what the Abington Robotics team has to do.
The FIRST Robotics Competition challenges teams of students and their mentors to solve a common problem in six week period using a standard kit of parts and a common set of rules. The Abington team has to build a working robot that then goes head to head against other student built robots in regional and national competitions. Our team is one of over a 1,000 nationally involved in this exciting program.
This program teaches the students how to work together to solve a common problem, how to work with engineers and how to apply technology in creative ways.
In its inaugural year, the Abington FIRST Robotics team was voted the best Rookie group in its class! This group of high school students has to design, build and run a robot that must carry out assigned tasks over a specified course in competition with robots from other schools. Winners advance to higher levels of competition.
This has been so successful that a First Lego League program has been started in the Middle School. The program is designed to increase the student's technical knowledge as well as their ability to apply this knowledge in practical situations.
