Music Technology Lab

The objective of the Music Technology Lab (MTL) is to enhance the music curriculum through effective use of carefully chosen music education software. This application of current technology in the music curriculum can boost interest in other areas of the arts such as theater, dance and visual art. All general music students in the Abington Heights Middle School will use MTL as well as all the performance ensembles.

AEIO was able to purchase 10 of the originally requested 15 workstations. With the planned 15 workstations, the lab will have a capacity of 30 students at a time. Three software packages have been purchased for the current equipment. Band in a Box teaches composition, arranging, improvisation and music theory. Music Ace Maestro is a comprehensive music theory and ear training course. eMedia Piano and Keyboard teaches beginning to intermediate piano skills as well as ear training. In addition to the students' workstations there is also a teacher's workstation which includes control modules, cables, headphones, keyboard interfaces, furniture as well as the software.

AEIO recently funded the remaining 5 workstations. Additional software packages addressing music notation, digital sampling, music history and music production can be added in succeeding years. Student compositions will be uploaded and featured on the school district's music website which is maintained by the teacher who will direct MTL.

MTL has the potential to be utilized by the entire Abington Heights Middle School. Nearly 1300 students attend the Abington Heights Middle School.
