Weather Bug
The WeatherBug Achieve Program (WBAP) equipment and software have been in use at the Abington Heights Middle School since the beginning of February, 2007. To date we have had fifth and sixth grade students participate in WBAP activities.
This program provides teachers and students at Abington Heights Middle School with an exciting view of weather and its effects on our daily life. By participating in the WBAP network, Abington Heights Middle School students develop a relationship with our local NBC affiliate, WBRE. Weather data from the equipment funded by AEIO is used daily in weather forecasts broadcast on the morning noon and evening newscasts. This venture allows the students to explore career opportunities in meteorology and broadcasting.

WBAP data is utilized by math teachers to provide examples of math used in the every-day world. The data is also interpreted by science classes to develop our own weather forecasts. Language arts classes will prepare broadcast scripts to be used on the daily announcements, thus providing writing and public speaking opportunities.
Our fifth grade Learning Support class visits the library every morning to gather temperature statistics. The students use the temperature to work on fraction and decimal problems in math class. Our sixth grade students utilized the WBAP software in February and March during their meteorology unit in Science.
The intent of the WBAP is to take one component of the science curriculum and integrate it across our entire curriculum. This integration provides many opportunities for the students to learn real life skill and realize how important math, English, communication, and science are to every day life. WBAP is a web-based program that utilizes real-time, real-world data to create an educational atmosphere of discovery and inquiry. It focuses on meteorology and allows students to explore the content matter through science, mathematics, geography and language arts experiences.
Features of WBAP include:
- Students learn at their own pace
- Interactive functionality provides instant feedback
- Concepts are reinforced by repetition of lessons using new data points
- Lessons are never outdated and always pose new challenges and choices
Faculty and Students are excited about the WBAP and check the statistics on a daily basis. You can, too! Just log on the www.ahsd.org and scroll to the bottom of the page. Our WBAP stats can be accessed through the link.
WBAP participants are students at Abington Heights Middle School.
